Maritzburg United MDC team is on track for the target they set for themselves this season, which is to win the PSL Reserve League title.

After beating Chippa United 1-0 in their last game, the reserve Team of Choice saw themselves occupying position four on the log with twelve points, which is three points way from the leaders of the pack Mamelodi Sundowns, who are on fifteen points after six games.

Last season, MUFC were strong contenders for the title, until they dropped crucial points in the latter stages of the league.

“We were very close last season, but the wheels came off at the last moments. We will not let that happen again. We want to stay as close as possible to the top teams to put pressure on them. Consistency is therefore very key for us so that one slip from above, we are there to climb to the top,” said captain fantastic, Bandile Shandu.

“We have to beat Ajax this Saturday, more so because we are playing at home,” he concluded.

Whilst the First Team will co-incidentally be taking on Ajax Cape Town that evening, Maritzburg United supporters are expected to flock to Harry Gwala Stadium to support the reserve team.

Six players in the starting line up and three of the substitutes on the bench in the last game against Chippa are all from Pietermaritzburg. This augers very well for a lot of support from the locals. “To have about 60% of the players coming from the area, creates even more passion and support for the club. People appreciate watching local players in action,” said Brian Zuma, the Communications manager at MUFC.
