Maritzburg snatch last gasp win
19 November 2016

Deolon Mekoa’s dramatic last second goal turned one point into three as Maritzburg United beat Ajax Cape Town 2-1 in the Mother City.

The first half had seen an evenly balanced game, United taking the lead just after the restart through Lebogang Maboe. Ajax leveled in the 80th minute but Mekoa ensured a maximum point haul when he scored on a counter-attack deep in added time.

In some early action, Denis Wiedlich fired over from in the box before Bantu Mzwakali did likewise for Ajax, although for the most part the first half didn’t dish up too much goalmouth action.

There was however one especially good opportunity for the Team of Choice, but Kurt Lentjies arrived a fraction too late to slide Maboe’s goal-line cross into the net on 34 minutes.

Maritzburg took the lead a minute after half time, the energetic Maboe on hand to fire home a superb volley into the top corner.

Devon Saal was unable to make use of two good opportunities to extend Maritzburg’s lead and instead it was the home side who leveled through Mark Mayambela 10 minutes from time.

United though deserved the maximum points and they arrived with the very final kick of the game as Mekoa showed great pace to burst into the box and fire an unstoppable shot across the keeper and into goal.

The referee’s whistle blew immediately afterwards, sparking joyous scenes of celebration amongst the travelling contingent.
