Maritzburg lose out in five goal thriller
22 November 2016

Maritzburg United’s trip down to the Cape did unfortunately not end on a high after they lost 3-2 to Cape Town City at Athlone on Tuesday night.

The first 45 minutes were a fast and open encounter with both sides looking dangerous on the break and it took United just five minutes to take the lead thanks to Brian Onyango’s close-range effort.

But it was level pegging again in the 20th minute when Lehlohonolo Majoro netted after a goal-mouth scramble.

Maritzburg nearly regained the lead when until Devon Saal narrowly missed sliding in Lebohang Maboe’s low cross in the 30th minute.

The home side struck immediately after the restart when Sibusiso Masina was able to pick his spot into the bottom corner.

But United replied with a superb goal eight minutes later - Evans Rusike thumping home a thunderous free kick that left the home goalkeeper with no chance.

Maritzburg United looked more likely to score after finding the equalizer, but instead it was Eric Tinkler’s side who got the winner when Manyama swept home a cross with a first time shot on 75 minutes.

The Team of Choice did all they could to level matters but the Cape side held held on for the three points which takes them top of the standings.
