Maritzburg claim maximum points from Limpopo trip
4 December 2016

Maritzburg United fought off a late onslaught from Baroka FC to earn a 1-0 win at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday.

The home side had the first chance on 17 minutes when Albert Mothupa had his header saved by Maritzburg keeper Bongani Mpandle.

The Team of Choice were close to scoring after 21 minutes when Bevan Fransman’s lob hit the crossbar before Denis Weidlich’s close range effort was blocked by Baroka keeper Oscarine Masuluke.

But it was Man-of-the-Match Mpandle who was the busier keeper as he kept Soso Rethabile, Mzwanele Mahashe, Marshall Munetsi and Mothupa from scoring before half time.

Baroka continued to look dangerous after the break, with Bandile Shandu doing well to clear off his own line.

Ffrom a blistering counter-attack United took the lead on 67 minutes when Mohau Mokate played in Lebohang Maboe, whose shot was blocked, but Sheldon van Wyk was on hand to finish from close range.

Maritzburg found themselves under increasing pressure for the final stages of the game, but some determined defending saw them over the line and coming home with maximum points.

The result takes the Team of Choice up to ninth position.
