Maritzburg United picked up a valuable point after a hard-fought 0-0 draw away at Platinum Stars on Saturday afternoon.

Stars had early chances on an extremely warm afternoon, but Benson Shilongo was well off target with a header while Tintswalo Tshabala fired wide before Gift Sithole headed wide from a corner.

The visiting side made some forays towards the Stars box in the closing 10 minutes of the half and two chances fell to Kurt Lentjies about 20-yards out, but he miscued the first and sent the second straight at Mbongeni Mzimela in goal.

Dikwena created more chances after half time but Shilongo’s shot was deflected wide, before Robert Ng'ambi went close with two efforts, the first having to be cleared off the line by defender Maritzburg Bevan Fransman.

After Lebogang Maboe spurned a decent chance in the box for United, Stars substitute Henrico Botes was inches away from finding the net with a 77th minute pile-driver from 30-yards.

Botes again came close with a powerful strike and then only some brave goalkeeping from Maritzburg keeper Bongani Mpandle denied Stars after they had a series of shots in succession three minutes from time.

The draw means United are unbeaten in their last four matches. They end 2016 with a home clash against Bidvest Wits on Tuesday.
