Ten-man Maritzburg battle for a draw

The Team of Choice fought from a goal and a man down for a hard-earned 1-1 draw against Bidvest Wits at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Tuesday night.


The result leaves United unbeaten in five games as they go into the Christmas and AFCON break.


Denis Weidlich had Maritzburg’s first chance, but missed the target from close range after 14 minutes.


Gabadinho Mhango could have put the Students ahead seven minutes before the interval but side-footed wide from in front of goal.


The Team of Choice were down to 10 minutes a few minutes before half time after captain Kurt Lentjies miss-timed a challenge on Phumlani Ntshangase and was sent off.


The Clever Boys were in front in the 70th minute when former Team of Choice striker Cuthbert Malajila scored from a Phakamani Mahlambi assist.


But Mohau Mokate leveled the game four minutes later when he pounced in the box following a corner.
