United beat Chilli Boys in five goal thriller
25 April 2017
Maritzburg United held on at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium to earn a 3-2 win over Chippa United in an Absa Premiership match on Tuesday night.
The win was a third in four league matches for Fadlu Davids and his team.
Maritzburg started strongly and Mondli Dlamini came within inches of scoring from Bandile Shandu's cross in the first minute.
And they were ahead in the eighth Mohau Mokate headed home from Kurt Lentjies' corner.
The Team of Choice defended well for the remainder of the half to keep Chippa from creating any clear-cut chances and took their lead into the break.
United sub Andrea Fillecia made an immediate impact when he was fouled by Chippa keeper Daniel Akpeyi to earn a penalty which Lentjies dispatched in the 65th minute.
The hosts thought they had scored in the 68th minute when Lerato Manzini forced the ball into the net, but the effort was to be ruled out after Virgil Vries was adjudged to have been fouled.
The Chippa pulled one back in the 77th minute when Lucky Sekome slotted in a free kick, but Maritzburg were 3-1 up within a minute when Fillecia struck.
Sekome scored again eight minutes from time, but Maritzburg held on without too many issues for the three points to secure seventh place on the Absa Premiership table.
