Davids proud efforts in Sundowns draw

Maritzburg United coach Fadlu Davids was pleased with the overall effort his side put in during the 2-2 draw with African Champions Mamelodi Sundowns at Attridgeville on Wednesday.

The Team of Choice took a 2-0 lead through goals from Brian Onyango and Evans Rusike, only for the Pretoria side to hit back with two late goals from Yannick Zakri, the equaliser coming in the dying seconds as Sundowns tried desperately to keep their title chase alive.

“You have got to congratulate the players really, for a fantastic effort, and a fantastic performance. Although the possession stats may not be on our side, but it was necessary,” Davids said after the match.

“Two nil up, you’re cruising a bit, but then you allow them to get back into the game. So, unfortunate in the end, in the last second to give it away. But at the end of the day a point, we’ll take it and fight again in the last game.”

Against opposition of the Brazilians’ caliber, focus was always going to be key for the Team of Choice,

“That [the Maritzburg players] followed instructions is one point. But the next point is that Sundowns are a fantastic team. To contain them you really need to be on point, in each movement, in each pressing situation, whether you are closing the inside or the outside, to be really connected to each other,” Daivids explained.

Maritzburg end their 2016/ 17 league campaign when they face Bloemfontein Celtic at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Saturday 27 May. United are in seventh place, but have three teams below them within three points.
