Maboe: We're United!
7 June 2017

Maritzburg United midfielder Lebohang Maboe says the unity in the squad and the support of the fans were key attributes to a successful ending to the season.

The Team of Choice finished the 2016/17 Absa Premiership campaign in seventh position, their best ever result in a top flight campaign and also a second top eight finish in three seasons.

Maboe explained how coach Fadlu Davids was able to tap in to the spirit of camaraderie which existed in the Maritzburg squad.

"I think what contributed to this was being united," he told KickOff. "I think when Fadlu took over he's the one who brought that up, emphasising us to be united more than any other thing. Bear in mind this is a team sport and we really fought for one another. We gave it our all and we deserved everything."

The 22-year-old midfield playmaker also expressed his gratitude to the Team of Choice supporters.

"If you also remember every match we were playing at home, fans kept coming in numbers and that also helped. So it was only fair from us to return the favour by getting the results over the line at home and make it difficult for any other team that is going to play us at home."

In what was his first season in the PSL, the former Mbombela midfielder was one of several Maritzburg United players who enjoyed a breakthrough campaign. He excelled with 26 league and cup appearances and four goals and at one stage earned the praise of interim Bafana Bafana coach Owen Da Gama.

He is now determined to take his game to another level next season.

"I'm sure you'll see more but I feel my game is growing and I can only get better by each season. I know it's not going to be easy but I'm up for the challenge.

"I'm one player who's expressing himself when I play and I don't think about anything except for expressing the talent that I have. But it goes with the hard work I put in at training, so it's not easy."
