This place hosts children from the surrounding areas of Edendale who come from disadvantaged communities. They are kept active through football whilst being also assisted with school work. The facility has a clinic for children between the ages of 8 and 23 which does a lot of tests particularly HIV. It serves over 800 children who collect their ARV’s from this clinic.
The facility has an astro turf where kids play football, and it’s one of the only Four in South Africa for Whizzkids “Kids come here and play everyday. We look after them, help them with their homework and HIV testing. Those that test positive are then put under ARV treatment,” Said Whizzkids Programme Director Clyde Duntu.
One of Maritzburg United players, Siphesihle Ndlovu was once part of this establishment as a youngster, and he addressed the kids saying "I was also here, I played here and did my homework here. I did all these things as well as testing for HIV. It is important that you take advantage of this facility, it is very helpful.”
Maritzburg United Marketing and Communications Manager gave some insight on Mandela day to the Kids. “Mandela was selfless with his own life. He and many others were imprisoned so that we could have a better life. This day is meant to remind us to be selfless and help those that are less fortunate than us. This is why we are here,” said Zuma.
The players then conducted coaching clinics and played with the children.
“Who knows, there may be another Siphesihle Ndlovu coming from here,” concluded Zuma.
