Since the Msunduzi Municipality partnered with the Team of Choice three seasons ago, Maritzburg have managed two top eight PSL finishes, including last season's best ever seventh-placed ending to a campaign.
Now after beating African champions Mamelodi Sundowns on their home turf in Pretoria in the opening round, Head Coach Fadlu Davids and his men are potentially only 90 minutes away from reaching the 2017 MTN final as they get set to face SuperSport United in a second leg semi-final encounter at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Saturday night (20H15 kick off). This after a 1-1 draw in the first leg affair, two weeks ago in Tshwane.
It's these kinds of occasions – big matches at the Harry Gwala Stadium, which highlight the successful partnership the Team of Choice have enjoyed with the City, and with the people of the KZN Midlands.
As such, Msunduzi Communications and IGR Manager Thobeka Mafumbatha has voiced the City's appreciation for the Team of Choice's role in energizing and inspiring the region, and she hopes to see a packed house for the showdown with Matsatsantsa.
"We are very proud of Maritzburg United and we wish them all the best for the semi-final game on Saturday. We are proud of them because they have managed to elevate our status as the capital city of KZN," Mafumbatha said.
"Currently all eyes are on us as a city, because of what Maritzburg United have done. We ask the fans to please come out in their numbers to support our boys. We as the municipality are going to be there, right behind them 100 percent. We are confident Maritzburg United are going to go out on Saturday and win this game and go on to claim the trophy.
"To the fans, this is our team it - belongs to us, so we need to show them maximum support – on social media, physically at the game on Saturday, may we make sure that we are all united as one voice behind this great team so that they can go on to bring the cup to Pietermaritzburg."
