MARITZBURG CLAIM DRAMATIC LATE WIN

Maritzburg United pulled off a sensational late fight-back at a packed Harry Gwala Stadium on Friday night
to beat Platinum Stars 2-1 in an Absa Premiership match.

Stars scored early through an unstoppable 13th minute free kick Riyaad Norodien, but for the most part of the night, Maritzburg were on the front foot and dictated play before Andrea Fileccia put his name up in lights with an 88th minute equaliser and a 94th minute winner to send United second on the table, at least until Saturday evening.

Having failed to carve open a stubborn Dikwena defence in the opening stanza, the Team of Choice came out invigorated after the break and had the visitors on the ropes for the next 50 minutes.

Fadlu Davids' men soon had chances as out Mohau Mokate and William Twala both had shots blocked at close range while Deolin Mekoa fired wide and Mokate’s header was saved by Dino Visser.

Visser also let a rocket from Pogiso Sanoka slip through his hands, the ball hitting the post before returning to the goalkeeper's hands. Visser then kept out Fileccia before Stars had a chance when Gerald Phiri's free kick flew into the side-netting.

The Team of Choice’s efforts paid dividends two minutes from regulation time when Visser failed to hold a cross, allowing Fileccia to smash home a fine volley.

With the partisan crowd at their backs Maritzburg appeared to have an extra man as they poured forwards, and the winner duly came when Fileccia slotted in a calm and confident penalty in the final minute of added time.
