The pair will lead Maritzburg into action for the first time on January 6 – away to Lamontville Golden Arrows, the club Khenyeza once played for, and the team Ertugral once coached.
Khenyeza was confirmed as the Team of Choice assistant coach on Thursday, just shortly after announcing his retirement as a player – the 36-year-old had been turning out this season for another KZN team, AmaZulu.
As the former Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns, SuperSport United, Black Aces and Ajax Cape Town striker explained, he has had his eye on coaching for some time.
“Becoming a coach is something I always wanted to pursue after my playing career. I have kept an eye on the Maritzburg over the years, and I am really happy to start my journey here,” he told the Team of Choice media department.
“It's not something new for me because I have been engaged with a lot of my coaches, because [coaching] is what I like, it’s in my blood,” Khenyeza continued.
“I've been coaching since I was 20 years old – on the side – I would train with my team during the day (as a player), and then later on I would do some coaching.”
For the Howick-born Khenyeza, who began his career with Maritzburg City, joining the Team of Choice has completed the full circle, and he can’t wait to work alongside Ertugral once more.
“It's very special to be back home, I have always wanted to come here,” he said. “I have watched this team a lot, the team is just around the corner. So I am familiar with the situation at the club and it’s nothing new to me.
“The Head Coach is one of the top coaches, who works to international standards. When I met him when I was much younger, it was when my mind changed about the way I see football. We’ve been talking all the time, even when we have been far apart, interchanging information.
“He’s very, very advanced in terms of his knowledge, he can see things 10 steps ahead of something happening… his approach is out of this world, top level. I learnt so many things from him when I was playing.
“Muhsin is passionate with a desire to win – we are the same, I’m very passionate about what I do, I can’t sleep if things are not going well.”
