The Team of Choice had the better of the chances on the night but couldn’t capitalise in front of goal, and also failed to convert a second half penalty which would have earned them a share of the spoils.
After a cautious start to the match from both teams, the hosts began to up the ante and that resulted in the first chance arriving in the 21st minute when Judas Moseamedi fired in a shot, but was kept out by Leopards keeper Jonas Mendes.
More opportunities followed for United, but they it wouldn’t fall for them in front of goal as Dan Morgan curled an effort just wide before Siyanda Xulu’s half-volley was also saved by Mendes.
Instead, the Limpopo team pounced with the opening goal in the 40th minute when Lesedi Kapinga found the bottom corner of the net to beat Richard Ofori.
After the break, chances were at a premium as the match continued to be closely contested.
Maritzburg however seemed to have found a way back into the game when in the 77th minute, they were awarded a penalty for a hand-ball in the box.
But chance went a-begging as Moseamedi’s spot kick was blocked by Mendes.
There was no way back after that as despite Maritzburg’s efforts, Lidoda Duvha were able to successfully shut up shop at the back.
The Team of Choice now have the chance to regroup, with their next game coming in more than three weeks time – away to Mamelodi Sundowns.
