IN TOUCH WITH: NAZEER ALLIE

19 May 2020

Approaching the mid 30's, many players would be winding down their careers. Not so Nazeer Allie, who still seems to have the same energy and commitment he exhibited when making his Premier Soccer League (PSL) debut for Ajax Cape Town as a teenager.

Now 34, Allie has been a revelation since joining Maritzburg United just under two years back.

He doesn't often make headlines, but the Capetonian has put in some crucial shifts for the Team of Choice in the heart of defence and has played an important part in helping the club to have one of the best defensive records in the league this season.

Uncompromising in the tackle and still with plenty of pace to burn, Allie's cool presence and reading of the game have helped those around him on the field.

Closing in on 250 top flight appearances, Allie has an Absa Premiership winners medal to his name and has also won the MTN8 and Telkom Knockout competitions, from his time with Bidvest Wits.

We caught up with Nazeer to find out how he's handling being away from the training field, which has been his 'office' for the better part of two decades now.

MUFC: Where are you spending the lockdown?
Nazeer Allie (NA): I’m just spending my time indoors with my family.

MUFC: How are you keeping busy?
NA: I’m keeping myself busy with the training program we got from our fitness guys at the club.

MUFC: Who is the person you are most in contact with during the lockdown and how do you guys chat?
NA: I’m in contact with Mr Paul (Paul Lamb, Performance Analyst), Rushine [De Reuck] and [Yusuf] Jappie.

MUFC:
Have you ever imagined life without football? And what would you have done for a career had you not been a footballer?
NA: No, but I would have studied Accounting.

MUFC: Are there any games/ movies/ series/ books that you can recommend?
NA: I will recommend the book “The Alchemist”.

MUFC: Looking at the season so far, which was the most impressive result/ game for the club?
NA: Telkom Knockout semi-final against Kaizer Chiefs [2-1].

MUFC: In which match do you feel you played your best?
NA: Against Polokwane City away game [1-0 win].

MUFC: What was the best goal scored by MUFC this season?
NA: Daylon Claasen first goal against Kaizer Chiefs, away game [2-1 win, Claasen scored the first with a lovely volley from a great team move, and also scored the second].
