In Touch With Brian Zuma
7 October 2014
Brian Zuma, Marketing and Communications Manager, sums up what has overall been a promising start to the season, both on and off the field.
The 2014/2015 Premier Soccer League season is gaining a lot of momentum. With seven league games, one knock-out tournament having been played and won, and one currently underway, this football season is really getting hot, and the manner in which teams are gaining and losing points, makes for another very interesting football season.
Looking at the extremes, Kaizer Chiefs are on song, having won all league and cup competition games they have played, on the other end, our brothers Amazulu are struggling to collect points. We are hoping that very soon, they will be able to regain their form and start winning games.
Maritzburg United started the season reasonably well with two wins, three draws and two losses gaining nine points in the process. Three of those games were played at Harry Gwala Stadium, and we won two and drew one, which so far is a very good home record.
With regards to the Telkom Knockout tournament, we were unfortunate to draw a team that we had played the previous weekend in a league game, and worse so, a team of Kaizer Chiefs’ calibre’. But having said that, the way in which our boys acquitted themselves in both games, especially the Telkom KO, they gave Kaizer Chiefs a run for their money.
The coach and the boys can take a lot of positives from both games as we will be hosting Platinum Stars in our next league encounter.
We have observed with admiration the increase in the number of spectators coming to our home games. This can be attributed, firstly to the good start that our team has had in the league, coupled with beautiful display of football, but also the amount of work that goes into marketing and promoting the club, is paying dividends.
About 3500 season tickets were sold, we have started opening supporter branches in Pietermaritzburg ( this process continues), the brass band provides sing along entertainment during matches and we will continue taking the team to the people as we visited the Greater Edendale Mall recently.
The Multi Choice Diski Challenge, a brilliant initiative by the PSL to have a reserve league going, is providing an excellent opportunity for the young stars as well as senior team players who are not getting game time, to play competitive football.
Results have not come our way yet, but one has observed progress in the way the boys are beginning to gel as a team. We are grateful to Hulamin for sponsoring our reserve side. We encourage the business community to explore investment opportunities that exist through sponsorship and/or partnership with the Team of Choice.
