11 March 2009

Goal Keeper Coach, Ronnie Kanalelo has made regular visits to the United’s Youth Training sessions. He has been passing on valuable rules and coaching our Youth Goal Keepers, said Head of Development Katz Naidoo.

Who better than the master himself, who has played professional Club Football for Sundowns and International Football for Nambia. Ronnie has made a difference to the keepers and his huge presence at the programme headquarters is a welcome sight as he eases his huge frame on the playing fields.

Speaking to Kanalelo he prides himself in passing on the right information to the specific age group, as this crucial in development.

”You have to know what to teach and when. While physical qualities such as agility, flexibility and reaction speed are paramount for goal keepers, so is positioning and handling.

“With regards to keepers in the junior teams, they must experience playing in various positions. This is because at this level, firstly you can’t tell if he is going to be a goal keeper and secondly in the modern game keepers are also infield players. For example when you look at Dutch teams their keepers operate like sweepers.”

On assisting the youth, Kanalelo believes that he is here to help every player who is registered with Maritzburg United and it is a pleasure to assist the Youth Programme. He also enjoys working with both Juniors and the Youth because of their personalities and willingness to learn and discover.
