Maritzburg United had a successful Awards Night on Tuesday to honour its troops for coming through a difficult season.
The Chairman, Mr. Farook Kadodia thanked the coach, players and technical staff for overcoming a tough season and fighting against the odds to finish 12 th in a drama filled season. "While it was tough and at times daunting, I am proud that we did it and for the City of Choice", said Mr. Kadodia.
Head Coach, Gordon Igesund in his address thanked his players and technical staff for the effort “when the chips were down” and after a late start and a long drawn off season the team came through and for that they must be saluted."
He also thanked the United faithful for their support during the season, by saying “you have been our successful 12th man”.
United’s Captain John Arwuah was the team’s Super Star for the 2008/2009 season when he was voted Player of the Year by the club and also was named the Player’s Player of Year by his team mates.
In his speech he thanked the management, coach, and technical staff for his achievements. "Without their support and team performance it would have been difficult. I owe both these awardsto my team", said Arwuah.
Gary Goldstone won the vote for “Moment of Brilliance” for his goal against Ajax Cape town, while the Sportsman of the Year award went the quietly spoken, Tsepho Mashishi.
Ace poacher Fadlu Davids walked off with Club’s leading goal scorer and the Most Promising Player went to emerging star Jabulani “JB” Ncubeni, formerly from the Maritzburg United Academy Team.
Pam Ntuli, the Club’s most vocal supporter was surprised when she was voted the Club’s Supporter of the Year. She richly deserved the award, stated the Club’s No. 1 supporter, Dan Dos Santos.
