TEAM OF CHOICE CONFIRM NEW MIDFIELD SIGNING FROM GABON

15 August 2020

Maritzburg United have boosted their squad with the signing of Gabon midfielder Nathanael Bongo Mbourou.

The 23-year-old arrives from the Oyem Athletic Club in his homeland, having also played for Gabonese giants Mounana, with whom he won the league in 2017.

Mbourou is a neat and compact central midfielder who shows great energy in the middle of the park, working hard to provide the link between defence and attack and using his defence-splitting passes to get his team on the front foot.

He has experience playing in the CAF Champions League and has enjoyed a small taste of the PSL after previously lining up for Mounana against SuperSport United in Pretoria.

The tenacious midfielder will add energy and industry to the United engine room. He has penned a two year contract with Maritzburg with the option of extending for another two years.

Mbourou’s paperwork has already been cleared, meaning that he will be eligible for selection for Sunday’s Absa Premiership clash with Black Leopards at the FNB Stadium (3.30pm kick off).

“I’m very excited to have signed with an ambitious team like Maritzburg United and to have the chance to play in South Africa’s top division,” Mbourou said.

“I’ve been working very hard to get match fit and if the coach decides to play me on Sunday I’ll be ready to give my all and show the Maritzburg fans what I can do,” he added.

Team of Choice CEO Younus Kadodia welcomed the player to the club: “Nathanael is a young player who is eager to prove himself on the Absa Premiership platform. Our technical team believe he has the attributes to be successful in this country and to provide the kind of characteristics we want in our midfield. A very warm welcome to Nathanael, and we trust his stay in Pietermaritzburg will prove to be a highly successful one.”

Maritzburg have a good record in signing players from across the African continent and it’s hoped that Mbourou will follow in the footsteps of a number of continental exports who have come before him.
