UNITED SUFFER LEAGUE OPENING SETBACK
24 October 2020
Maritzburg United were on the wrong end of a 2-1 scoreline against Baroka FC in their opening match of the new DStv season, away at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Team of Choice had an early chance when Judas Moseamedi put Thabiso Kutumela through on goal but from a tight angle he failed to hit the target in the sixth minutes.
Instead it was the home side who drew first blood, in the 10th minute, when a free flowing move ended with a cross in from the left by Ananias Gebhardt which as tapped home by Richard Mbulu.
Maritzburg had a couple of chances midway through the opening half for an equaliser but it didn't materialise as Moseamedi was played in by Daylon Claasen but had his shot blocked, before the big striker went just wide with a header from the resulting corner.
There was another excellent opportunity for the Team of Choice in the 27th minute for Kutumela, but following a great cross from Claasen, his header was well saved by home keeper Elvis Chipezeze.
United kept up the pressure in the hosts but couldn’t find the breakthrough as they went into half time a goal down.
There was another good opportunity for Maritzburg after the break when Moseamedi’s back heel put in Tlolane, but his a left footed effort was tipped wide from Chipezeze.
Things then got worse for United in the 57th minute when Nhlanhla Mgaga scored from outside of the box to double the Limpopo team's advantage.
The introduction of Jose Meza off the bench gave Maritzburg more impetus and he pulled a goal back in the 85th minute with a fine volley, following a superb through ball by Keegan Buchanan.
But the fight-back unfortunately proved to be in vein as the Team of Choice were unable to find a second goal and had to leave Polokwane empty handed.
