STELLENBOSH DENY MARITZBURG VICTORY
18 December 2020

Maritzburg United's final DSTV Premiership match of 2020 ended in a 2-2 draw against Stellenbosch United at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Friday night.

In a game full of goalmouth action, United battled hard for the win but were left disappointed as the Cape side twice came from behind.

The Team of Choice had got themselves off to a perfect start when Daylon Claasen won the ball and fed Judas Moseamedi, who turned neatly on the edge of the box and fired in an expertly taken low shot into the bottom corner of the net after just two minutes.

Moseamedi also had another chance but shot straight at Stellenbosch keeper Sage Stephens, before the visiting side equalised in the 10th minute via a swift counter attack, a cross to the back post and then a Mark van Heerden header.

It however took Maritzburg only five minutes to regain the lead as Moseamedi pounced on a moment of indecision in the visitors' box to finish clinically with a low shot past Stephens.

More opportunities followed for United as Fares Hachi thundered a 35th minute shot against the woodwork before Moseamedi had an effort saved and then Sibusiso Hlubi smashed the ball over goal on the rebound.

The hosts alsohad a few half chances after the restart but after failing to add to their tally, the Cape side equalised on 56 minutes when Stanley Dimgba stole in at the back post to convert a low cross.

The Team of Choice came fighting back as Kwanda Mngonyama and Rushine De Reuck both sent a headers over the bar.

With 20 minutes to play, Keagan Buchanan was inches away from regaining the lead for his team when his free kick struck the post.

Bongokuhle Hlongwane then did well to get in a snap shot from the edge of the box, which Stephens saved smartly.

That proved the last real chance for Maritzburg, who could well claimed all three points with the chances they created on the night.

The Team of Choice will be back in action after New Years with a #DStvPrem clash against Bloemfontein Celtic at the Harry Gwala Stadium on January 6.
