TEAM OF CHOICE CLAIM MAXIMUM POINTS AT THE FNB STADIUM
9 January 2021
A superb brace from Judas Moseamedi fired Maritzburg United to a 2-0 win over Kaizer Chiefs in a DStv Premiersship encounter at the FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The victory was a second in a row for Maritzburg after their 2-1 win over Bloemfontein Celtic last weekend.
The first half was a tight and largely cagey affair with neither side looking threatening in front of goal.
Chiefs enjoyed quite a bit of the early play, but when they did look to threaten through Khama Billiat, Clayton Daniels was up to the task with some excellent tackles.
The first chances of the game fell to Amakhosi defender Siyabonga Ngezana around the midway point of the opening stanza.
But there was no concern to the Maritzburg goal as he fired a long ranger well over and also missed with a header.
The Team of Choice continued to frustrate the hosts, whose only other efforts on goal were from distance by Billiat; one was comfortably saved by Jethren Barr and the other went wide.
United meanwhile managed to threaten down the right wing through Daylon Claasen, but he just wasn't quite able to link up with forwards Thabiso Kutumela and Judas Moseamedi.
The match remained tight after the restart, with little to choose between the sides as the matched each other blow for blow.
While Chiefs introduced Samir Nurkovic to the action, Maritzburg coach Ernst Middendorp brought on Daniel Morgan and Gadinkame Modise just after the hour mark.
And with 65 minutes played, Morgan whipped in a good cross which was only partially cleared by the home defence, the ball falling to Modise, whose in-swinging cross expertly locate the run of Moseamedi to glance a lovely header into the net.
Chiefs had a couple of chances to pull a goal back but instead it was the Team of Choice who added a second goal when Morgan's throw-in located Moseamedi in the box, where the big man did superbly to bring down the ball before firing in a brilliant goal from a tight angle on his left foot.
After that it was a matter of closing the game out, which United did well and without too much issue, thanks to some resolute defending.
