CREATING A BUZZ AROUND MARITZBURG
15 August 2014
Maritzburg United Marketing and Communications Manager Brian Zuma reports back on what has been a promising start to the season.
It would seem that the partnership deal between Maritzburg United and Msunduzi Municipality, has had a very positive effect on the boys, if their performance in the first two games of the season is anything to go by.
They scored four out of a possible six points, earning themselves an early third position on the log. By holding Mamelodi Sundowns to a one all draw away, without seven of signed players due to the Sundowns player loan policy, and the delay in issuing of work permits, meant that the Team of Choice continues where it ended when it was the only team unbeaten by Sundowns in the previous season.
Not only was the 2-1 victory against a stubborn Polokwane City an inspiration to the fans, but also the type of football that was displayed by the boys in blue left the spectators satisfied that indeed they will see a different Team of Choice that will compete this season. Clearly, Head Coach Steve Komphela and his technical team, have their fingers on the pulse.
But what is even more encouraging, is the way the youngsters that have been roped in, have actually exerted themselves. Attacking entertaining football and quick inter-passing are distinguished qualities that have been displayed by the boys. When they become more clinical in front of goal, it will be difficult for opponents to stop them.
This is the type of football that fans expect when they pay their money to go and watch a football match. With this kind of performance, we will definitely see more bums on seats at Harry Gwala Stadium.
What is even more interesting, and is a giant step towards football development in the country, is the introduction of the under 19 League called the Multi Choice Diski Challenge.
This will be formed and represented by all sixteen teams in the Premier Soccer League. This provides a wonderful platform for clubs to develop home grown talent which will facilitate progression from academy football to the professional ranks.
As a club, we definitely welcome this opportunity, and we are embarking on a process of solidifying our under 19 team, that will be competitive and will go there and truly represent. The young, aspirant and talented boys within Msunduzi Municipality and beyond, through this initiative, will have an opportunity to be exposed to life and leadership development skills as well as exposure to careers in broadcasting by attending a one week career conference at the Multi Choice Campus.
The people of Pietermaritzburg can look forward to an exciting season of football. Let us rally behind our boys and buy season tickets which are available at club offices. The Gold Package gives you a replica jersey and 12 ( now 11) home games for R300, and the Silver package gives you a branded t-shirt and twelve( now 11) home games for R100.
The Team of Choice, in the City of Choice for the People of Choice!
