Mokate Shows He’s A Quick Learner

25 August 2014

Hard work and commitment to his trade have seen Mohau Mokate successfully making the transition from playing for Second Division side Orbit FC to representing Maritzburg United in the Absa Premiership.

Mokate has been one of several revelations in a new-look Maritzburg United side this season, and has shown great promise thus far, having already netted his first Absa Premiership goal in the 2-0 win over Polokwane City.

The 23-year-old who hails from the small town of Koster in the North West Province and who last season played in the third tier, tells maritzburgunited.co.za how he arrived in Pietermaritzburg and shares his thoughts on his first couple of weeks at the club:

“My agent told me about the trials that Maritzburg were having, so we came down, and fortunately it went well and I was given the chance to sign for the team. I’m happy that God has given me this opportunity, I’m grateful to be playing in the PSL, and that I was able to score a goal for the team,” he explained.

“I have always wanted to get into the PSL, and its through hard work that I have achieved this. I’m the first person from my town to play in the PSL, they are very proud of me back home and I will work hard as hard as I can to keep on improving,” he said.

Mokate says he draws his inspiration from Kaizer Chiefs striker Bernard Parker as well as Real Madrid marksman Karim Benzema. Making his debut against the star-studded Mamelodi Sundowns side, the rookie front-man got to rub shoulders with a host of the Absa Premiership’s top stars, and athough admitting to have been nervous, he went on to acquit himself well in the 1-1 draw.

“That was my first game in the PSL, and I found it quite difficult, especially in the first half. Its very fast and physical, very competitive. I was a bit shaky when we started, but in the second half I got better. Some people say that I did well, but I know that I can still improve my game a lot.

“The coach Steve Komphela has shown that he has faith in me, he encourages me, and I will continue to work hard at training to try and ensure I can keep my place in the team.”
