MARITZBURG DEFEATED BY PIRATES IN SEASON FINALE
24 May, 2022

Maritzburg United went down 4-1 to Orlando Pirates in a DStv Premiership encounter at the Orlando Stadium on Tuesday night for what was the Team of Choice's last action of the season.

Maritzburg were almost ahead in the third minute when Friday Samu turned smartly on the edge of the area before pulling his shot inches wide.

Pirates had chances as Thembinkosi Lorch fired one shot straight at Team of Choice goalkeeper Marcel Engelhardt, who then did superbly to deny the same player by pushing a low shot onto the post.

There was no denying Lorch however as he beat the off-side trap in the 21st minute and curled a shot into the far corner.

With 40 minutes gone, Tawanda Macheke was close to equalising went he fired a powerful shot marginally wide after cutting inside with purpose from the left flank.

Instead it was the home side who were to score next as Kwame Peprah latched onto Lorch’s cross and swept the ball into goal.

Pirates notched their third goal of the night when Hotto netted after a quick counter attack involving Lorch on the hour mark.

Maritzburg pulled a goal back in the 63rd minute when Samu finished clinically in the box after Brandon Theron’s square ball across the box.

However, Pirates were to reclaim their three goal cushion when Kabelo Dlamini ran onto a Lorch backheel and scored.

The Team of Choice were able to create some opportunities after that, but failed to reduce the deficit.

United end the season in 12th position on the DStv Premiership log.
