WE WANT TO FINISH STRONG, SAYS OFORI

A five-month halt to professional football in South Africa will come to an end next week as the Absa Premiership will resume under stringent Covid-19 regulations in a Gauteng bio-bubble.
Maritzburg United club captain, Richard Ofori, has been discussing their delight at the latest developments. He says the Team of Choice has welcomed the news that everything will be settled on the football pitch.
“I feel great that the league has resumed because we missed the action and it also gives the teams a chance to fight for their own destiny, like getting promoted from the lower leagues, qualifying for MTN8 and winning the league,” he said.
The Ghanaian number one is confident that his team-mates are in good physical condition after following strict individual programmes during the lockdown. However, he is also weary about the lack of match sharpness that such a long lay-off could have on the remaining fixtures.
“The team is very strong and solid because we have been training individually during the lockdown but we need to start smart because of match fitness and hopefully finish the season in a good position,” Ofori continued.
Ofori and co were enjoying a fine season pre-lockdown. Solid defensively, the Team of Choice racked up 10 clean sheets this campaign so far and are converting chances at the other end with Thabiso Kutumela and Daylon Claasen spearheading the attack.
United sit pretty in fifth on 39 points but will look to pick up from where they left off in the closing weeks of the season.
The skipper added: “Of course, we can finish the season strong because we are highly motivated after our great start to the season. We have worked very hard since the start so we shall finish strong.”
United will play Black Leopards in the first game back. Dates and times are yet to be confirmed.
