ABSA PREM RETURN ENDS IN DEFEAT FOR UNITED

16 August 2020

Maritzburg United were someway off their best in their first game in five months as they went down 3-2 to a fighting Black Leopards at the FNB Stadium on Sunday afternoon

The Team of Choice had done well to strike back from going two goals down to pull it back to 2-2, only to concede from a set-play shortly after the half time break.

It was always going to be tough to hit the ground running and Maritzburg made a rather sluggish start to the match as Richard Ofori uncharacteristically dropped a 19th minute cross, with Mwape Musonda there to pounce from close range to put Lidoda Duvha in the lead.

It got worse for United on the half hour mark when a long ball from the Leopards keeper King Ndlovu allowed Musonda in. After riding two challenges, he was bravely challenged by Ofori, but the rebound fell nicely for Lifa Hlongwane to fire home.

However, four minutes later and the Team of Choice were back in business when Keagan Buchanan curled in a sublime free kick, leaving Ndlovu grasping at thin air.

That was in the 34th minute, and by the time the 44th minute arrived, Maritzburg were back on level terms when a short corner from Daylon Claasen picked out Mxolisi Kunene, who took a touch before blazing in a rising shot into the roof of the net at the near post. Kunene was later forced off with what appeared a serious injury.

Unfortunately the KZN side’s hard work was undone just five minutes into the second half when Tiklas Thutlwa ghosted into the box to nod home a corner kick; albeit that replays suggested it should actually have been a goal kick.

Following that goal, the game became increasingly cagey as the Limpopo club worked hard to defend their lead. Maritzburg meanwhile chipped away at trying to get back into it, but it just wouldn’t quite click for them in the opposition half.

The Team of Choice continued fighting all the way to the end of the game and had a succession of chances in the final 10 minutes.

That included a snap shot from Judas Moseamedi which failed to threaten Ndlovu, as well as a Pogiso Sanoka volley which was blocked and a Buchanan free kick which whistled inches wide.

Lidoda Duvha however are fighting for their lives and that was evident as they dug in firmly and gave their all to see out the win.

Its back to the drawing board now for the Team of Choice as we prepare for our next game – against Mamelodi Sundowns on Friday 21 August.
