MARITZBURG BEATEN BY SUPERSPORT
2 June 2021
Maritzburg United were on the wrong end of a 2-0 score-line away to SuperSport United at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Wednesday night.
It was a frustrating evening for the KwaZulu-Natal capital city side as we did have attempts on goal but failed to register on the score-sheet.
For SuperSport, Bradley Grobler was on target with goals in the 18th and 69th minutes.
After Matsatsantsa winger Ghampani Lungu had missed an early chance, he provided a low cross for Grobler to convert at the back post for the opener.
The Team of Choice were able to fashion several long-range efforts but were unable to trouble Ronwen Williams in the home goal.
Maritzburg made a double change for the second half, with Nazeer Allie and Bandile Shandu coming off the bench to take over from Dusan Stevic and Daylon Claasen.
But there was another setback with 20 minutes to play when Sipho Mbule’s free kick was met with a glancing header by Grobler as the Tshwane side doubled their advantage.
Five minutes later there was a half chance for the KZN side when Ryan Rae’s long throw in was headed goal wards by Malebogo Modise but he was unable to steer it on target.
Grobler also hit the post late on as Martizburg failed to mount any serious challenge for comeback, althugh with five minutes to go Modise did well to cut the ball back for Phumlani Ntshangase for a shot on the edge of the box but his effort went wide.
