MARITZBURG BATTLE HARD FOR A POINT AGAINST THE STUDENTS

24 August 2020

Maritzburg United had to work hard to earn a 0-0 draw against a tough Bidvest Wits side at the Tuks Stadium on Monday afternoon.

In a game of mixed chances for both teams, the point takes United up to 41 points and they remain in sixth position.

The first half was a lively affair with chances falling at both ends of the field, although neither side were clinical enough in the final third.

After what had initially been a tight start, Wits midfielder Ronwen Human went one-on-one with Richard Ofori and it was the Team of Choice keeper who made a great block, before the loose ball was cleared off the line thanks to Nazeer Allie.

At the other end, Tebogo Tloane had a shot blocked moments later.

United had another decent chance 11 minutes before the break when some nice interplay created space for Thabiso Kutumela, but his shot flew well over the bar.

The Clever Boys came out firing after the half time interval and Ofori had to be alert to keep out a long range effort from Haashim Domingo.

More opportunities followed for Gavin Hunt's team as Ronwen Human twice went inches wide of scoring with two shots inside a minute.

With 25 minutes to go the Students looked set to take the lead when Sameegh Doutie pounced in the box, but Maritzburg defender Dan Morgan showed excellent anticipation to get back and clear off the line.

With the next play, Keagan Buchanan picked out Kutumela with a fantastic pass, but although Kutumela's touch was good, he was unable to find the net as Ricardo Goss quickly got off his line to make the save.

Those proved to be the last real chances - the closing stages of the match provided lots of tension, but no real further opportunities despite both teams having a couple of promising moments.

The Team of Choice now turn their focus to Saturday's game against Highlands Park in Dobsonville.
