BUCKLEY ENTRUSTED IN CARETAKER ROLE
24 November 2020
Maritzburg United can confirm that we have handed the head coaching duties to Delron Buckley on a temporary basis.
Buckley, a former Maritzburg player himself, knows the culture of the KwaZulu-Natal Capital City club well.
And he will be stepping up this week from the assistant coach's role to that of caretaker coach, after the Team of Choice parted ways with head coach Eric Tinkler on Monday.
Despite doing well last season to end in seventh position and reach a cup final, Maritzburg did not actually end the 2019/20 season strongly, and have continued to stutter for form in the current campaign - still searching for a first win of the new season.
Buckley understands that a big part of his job will be psychological and his immediate challenge will be to restore some confidence on the training pitch this week as the Team of Choice prepare for Friday night's clash with SuperSport United at the Harry Gwala Stadium.
The former Bafana Bafana international will be paying especially close attention to the players' mind-sets.
"It's a normal situation when a coach goes, players start thinking about what's going to happen," Buckley explained.
"For me now as a caretaker coach I have to boost the players' morale. Get them motivated and get them prepared for the game on Friday.
"It's up to the players to take the situation into their own hands," he continued. "It's a do or die game and the minute they put their foot onto the pitch, they must realise that if we are going to win, we are going to have to be aggressive and challenge for every ball.
"Sometimes when the going gets tough, you can't play pretty football. You have to play the ugly way to win games."
