CONGRATULATIONS RUSHINE: DE REUCK CROWNED BEST PSL DEFENDER OF THE SEASON
22 October 2020
It was a proud night for Maritzburg United defender Rushine De Reuck, his family and for everyone at the club as he was named the Absa Premiership Defender of the Season for 2019/20 on Thursday.
De Reuck was handed his accolade at the virtual Premier Soccer League end-of-season awards, which had been delayed due to the coronavirus outbreak.
The 24-year-old had been short-listed alongside Kaizer Chiefs centre-back Daniel Cardoso and Mamelodi Sundowns defender Motjeka Madisha.
De Reuck played in all 30 league matches for Maritzburg last season as well as in six cup games, in what was his third season with the club.
The Cape Town-born player put in a series of sparkling performances and it is testament to Rushine’s hard work, dedication and desire to improve that he has beaten off many more experienced defenders to win the award.
The Team of Choice also had Bongokuhle Hlongwane and Judas Moseamedi up for awards on the night. Hlongwane, our exciting young striker progressed outstandingly last season but however lost out to Goodman Mosele for the Absa Premiership Young Player of the Season trophy.
Moseamedi, scorer of numerous big goals for the Team of Choice last season and beyond, was in line for the Telkom Knockout Player of the Tournament award, but that was scooped up by Sundowns' Gaston Sirino.
Head coach Eric Tinkler also received recognition for what was overall an excellent campaign for Maritzburg as they finished seventh and reached the Telkom Knockout final.
He was nominated alongside Ernst Middendorp of Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns’ Pitso Mosimane, with the latter winning that category.
