COACH ERNST: PLAYERS WERE COMMITTED, BUT WE MADE MISTAKES
20 December 2020
There were positives and negatives to take from Maritzburg United's 2-2 draw with Stellenbosch FC in what was our last match of 2020.
The Team of Choice scored two well-taken goals, both through Judas Moseamedi, against the Cape side at the Harry Gwala Stadium.
But other chances were squandered, and twice the visitors came from a goal down to equalize.
Maritzburg United head coach Ernst Middendorp was pleased with some aspects of the game but also highlighted where improvements are needed.
"I think we worked hard. The players were committed and the players were focused. We made mistakes here and there, in attack and defence," Middendorp commented.
"In attack, there were possibilities where you just have to tap the ball in - we want to destroy the net. These are small stuff, but with a third goal, then I think it would be done."
The Premier Soccer League (PSL) will have a short Christmas recess, with our next match set for January 6, against Bloemfontein Celtic at the Harry Gwala Stadium.
"We have to work on it, the season is still long," coach Ernst added. "I said it would not be finalized end of January or February. We have to work, we have to correct the mistakes we are making in defence and attack.
“Some players probably need a little bit of a break. If I see some experienced players, in terms of freshness I think they are hanging a bit, but that's normal in a season with an incredible challenging year, 2020. For us it's important to have this bigger frame, end of season mid of May."
