MARITZBURG LOOKING TO KICKSTART 2021 WITH CELTIC WIN
1 January 2021
Maritzburg United’s first match of the new year sees us taking on Bloemfontein Celtic in a DStv Premiership encounter at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Saturday evening.
The Team of Choice showed an improvement in form towards the end of last year having drawn against Mamelodi Sundowns and Stellenbosch FC and will now be looking to use that foundation to go on and claim maximum points against Phunya Sele Sele.
“We picked up two solid points before the break and want to build on that,” Maritzburg United midfielder Daylon Claasen stated. “We can only build from that because we had two good games and the guys did well, the way we played.”
Our head-to-head record against the Free State side is good – in 30 previous matches Maritzburg have won 13, drawn 11 and lost six.
However, Celtic have enjoyed an upper-hand over United in recent times, with a 3-1 win in the league in Bloemfontein, and a 3-2 Nedbank Cup victory last season. In the corresponding league fixture at the Harry Gwala Stadium last season, the game ended 2-2.
Having enjoyed a short break with their families, the Maritzburg players are recharged and in a good frame of mind going into 2021.
“It [the Maritzburg camp] seems to be clear-minded – going back with the family, spending time with them and since coming back and things have been good at training,” Claasen said.
“The guys are well prepared for Celtic but we know its not going to be an easy match because they are a dangerous team and anything can happen on the day; we know they are not a team to underestimated,” the former Bafana Bafana midfielder concluded.
The match is set for a 17H30 kick off and will be broadcast on SuperSport channel 202.
