MARITZBURG OFF THE MARK IN 2021 WITH CELTIC WIN
2 January 2021
Maritzburg United fought hard to secure a 2-1 win over Bloemfontein Celtic in a DStv Premiership match at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The home side started the game with positive intent and had a chance when Tebogo Tlolane's curling shot was superbly kept out by Phunya Sele Sele goalkeeper Sipho Chaine.
Maritzburg's early efforts were rewarded in the 26th minute when Keagan Buchanan threaded a brilliant ball through the Celtic defence and into the path of Kutumela, who did superbly to go around goalkeeper and slot the ball into the net.
Ten minutes later and United had the chance to double their lead when Buchanan played in Daylon Claasen, who was fouled by Ryan de Jongh and a penalty was awarded.
Kutumela showed nerves of steel, and excellent technique as he picked out the bottom left hand corner to make it 2-0.
Celtic had a lot of the ball after half time and they were able to create some decent chances on goal.
Team of Choice stoppr Jethren Barr was however in inspired form as he kept out shots from Thato Lingwati', Motebang Sera and Victor Letsoalo
But the Free State team upped the ante in the closing minutes of the game and pulled a goal back in the 82nd minute when Letsoalo volleyed in from close range.
There were some anxious moments as the match went into seven minutes of additional time, but the team of Choice defended resolutely to ensure victory.
