COACH SEES PROGRESS IN MARITZBURG'S PERFORMANCE
26 October 2020
It wasn't the result Maritzburg were looking for as they lost 2-1 to Baroka FC in a DStv Premiership match in Polokwane on Saturday, but head coach Eric Tinkler was able to identify some positives.
The Team of Choice went into Saturday's encounter on the back of a 2-1 defeat to Kaizer Chiefs in the MTN8 quarter-finals.
While Maritzburg had faded in the second half versus Amakhosi, against Baroka, they did put up a spirited effort as they came from 2-0 down and pulled a goal back through debutant Jose Meza.
For coach Eric there were some concerns over his side's inability to take control of the game when it was there for the taking. On the other hand he was pleased with the attitude and effort his men gave.
"The problem against Chiefs was the intensity," he explained. "I was more upset because it [the Baroka match] was a game where we should have retained possession a lot better, we needed to play it between the lines a lot better. Because there was a lot of space for us to play.
"And I felt in the first half we were the ones to have the ascendancy. The only time they hurt us was in behind - both goals came on the counter attack, ball in behind, and us reacting late to that," the Maritzburg tactician further elaborated.
"Second half saw a more gutsy performance, we looked to get ourselves back into the game. But because we're committing bodies forward we ended up conceding on the counter. But we kept going, we kept trying and we got one and I felt that possibly we could have got another.
"The combinations still need to work for us, we need to find our feet and our balance. But I'm seeing a lot of positive things, in comparison to last week."
Maritzburg have a quick turnaround for their next fixture; a first home match of the season in the league as they take on Cape Town City at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Wednesday night.
