COACH ERIC WANTS TO BOUNCE BACK WITH HOME WIN
27 October 2020
Maritzburg United are eager to get their season up and running by securing victory over Cape Town City in a DStv Premiership fixture at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Wednesday night.
This will be the first home match of the season for the Team of Choice, and although there won’t be any supporters due to Covid-19 restrictions, a return to our home fortress, the scene of many famous victories, will hopefully help invoke the spirit of the fans.
This will be Maritzburg’s second league game of the 2020/21 campaign, having started with a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Baroka FC away in the Limpopo Province last weekend.
Head coach Eric Tinkler is now imploring his charges to make a statement of intent and to inject some confidence into the team by giving their all to secure victory against Cape Town City.
“It’s a home game and we would obviously like to ensure we collect the three points and start getting back to winning ways. Unfortunately we’ve put ourselves under pressure with the loss against Baroka, so we are going to try and bounce back immediately from that loss,” he said.
Positives from Baroka game game
Maritzburg conceded first against Bakgaga but showed good character with a strong second half performance. There was also an excellent goal on debut for Jose Meza which bodes well for his future at the club.
Team news
Phumlani Ntshangase is out injured while Kwanda Mngonyama serves the last match of his suspension. Otherwise United have a clean bill of health for Wednesday night.
Head-to-head
Since City’s formation in 2016, the two clubs have met nine times and there has been nothing to separate them with three wins each and three draws. Last season Maritzburg drew 1-1 with the Citizens in Pietermaritzburg and beat them 1-0 in the Mother City.
