MARITZBURG LOSE TO THE CITIZENS
28 October 2020

It was a tough night for Maritzburg United at the Harry Gwala Stadium n Wednesday as they went down 1-0 to Cape Town City in a DStv Premiership encounter.

Maritzburg had seemingly made a perfect start to the match when Daylon Claasen played Thabiso Kutumela in on goal in the first minute and the latter picked out the bottom corner of the net, only to see the offside flag go up.

And then just eight minutes later United found themselves a goal down when Mduduzi Mdantsane found the bottom right hand corner of Jethren Barr's goal to put the Citizens ahead.

A mistake in the City defence ten minutes later could have resulted in an equaliser, but Modise was unable to score as he dragged his left-foot shot wide.

The Team of Choice's hopes of getting back into the game suffered a bit setback a couple of minutes before the interval when Riyaaz Ismael was red-carded.

To their credit, Maritzburg did not let their numerical disadvantaged count against them as they came out fighting in the second half.

There was a good opportunity to equalise in the 70th minute when Kutumela instigated a counter attack and played in Judas Moseamedi, but his parting shot went the wrong side of the post.

Kutumela then came close himself five minutes later with a free kick that missed the target by a matter of inches.

Try as they did though, United just couldn't make the breakthrough and unfortunately ended the night empty-handed.
