MARITZBURG UNITED PART COMPANY WITH TINKLER
23 November 2020
Maritzburg United have terminated the contract of Eric Tinkler with immediate effect.
The decision follows a poor run of results that dates back to last season and was carried into the current Premier Soccer League (PSL) term.
The Team of Choice have not won in 11 games, with their last victory coming way back in March, prior to the coronavirus pandemic.
They failed to win a match in the bio-bubble in August and September – losing three and drawing three of their six matches – to eventually end in seventh place.
At one stage they were in the top four before the lockdown put a stop to all sport. The club failed to improve when the 2020/21 season started, losing in the opening round of the MTN8 to Kaizer Chiefs, before losing four matches in a row in the DStv Premiership.
“It has been an extremely disappointing start to the season and the results have not been forthcoming,” Maritzburg Chairman Farook Kadodia said.
“The Board therefore took the decision to terminate the contract of the coach. We would like to wish him all the best in his future endeavours.”
Maritzburg lost to Baroka FC, Cape Town City, Chippa United and Black Leopards in their four matches this season, the latest setback being a 1-0 loss to Lidoda Duvha on Saturday.
The club is currently in discussions over who will lead the team on an interim basis until a permanent appointment is made.
