UNITED RUN OUT WINNERS AFTER DRAMATIC LATE TWIST
2 March 2021

A 93rd minute penalty from Thabiso Kutumela earned Maritzburg United a 1-0 victory over Black Leopards in a DStv Premiership encounter at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Tuesday night.

The points earned lifted the Team of Choice above Leopards and into 15th place on goal difference.

United had started the game with purpose and had a 13th minute shot on goal through Kutumela, who went close with a long range strike.

Five minutes later Jose Meza was unfortunate not to have put Maritzburg ahead after he blasted a shot back off the underside of the crossbar.

More openings followed as Bongokuhle Hlongwane was denied a chance to get a header on target by some good defending before Tebogo Tlolane missed with a free kick and then Meza volleyed narrowly over the bar.

United were on the front foot again after half time and Hlongwane soon tested the visiting keeper with a flicked effort after a ball into the near post by the lively Kutumela.

In the 55th minute there was another chance for the KZN side when Kutumela picked out Moseamedi at the far post, but the big man, on at half time for Nazeer Allie, had his header tipped over the bar by Lidoda Duvha keeper King Ndlovu.

Chances flowed as Meza played in Moseamedi, who fired in a shot straight at the goalkeeper before Kutumela combined with Riyaaz Ismail before shooting wide of the target.

It wasn't looking though as if it would be the Team of Choice's night as the game went into added time with the scores still deadlocked at 0-0.

But United kept up the pressure and had the opportunity they needed when debutant Ryan Rae was brought down in the box and a penalty was awarded.

Kutumela shouldered the responsibility, and held his nerve superbly, to beat Ndlovu from the spot and earn Maritzburg the three points.
