COACH ERNST: WE HAVE TO KEEP FIGHTING
10 January 2021

Maritzburg United head coach Ernst Middendorp wants to see more of the same character which was on display against Kaizer Chiefs at the FNB Stadium on Saturday.

The Team of Choice put in an excellent all-round performance to claim maximum points through a 2-0 win over Amakhosi in the DStv Premiership.

United grew stronger as the game progressed and scored both their goals in the second half, thanks to a Judas Moseamedi brace.

Coach Ernst had decided to sacrifice Daylon Claasen at the half time interval in order to give Gadinkame Modise a chance to influence the contest, and it was Modise who set up the opening goal with an inch-perfect cross.

“Of course we had to adjust in half time, we had some problems with Khama [Billiat], no doubt about it,” Middendorp explained.

"Daylon is a fantastic player, no doubt about it. But tactically I know Modise with his speed, his pace comes into it.

“He got a free kick out of his pace with the ball. He is very powerful and very skillful in terms of finishing, in terms of taking a shot from distance," Maritzburg's tactician explained.

Coach Ernst also spoke positively of the Team of Choice's ability to make the most of what were limited opportunities against Amakhosi.

“I think more and more we felt more comfortable,” he said. “And good, we have the difference - we can make out of three or four chances, two goals.

“I don’t know how Judas scored [the second] goal (a volley from a tight angle on his left foot after controlling a long throw-in from Dan Morgan into the box), it was fantastic, outstanding. But this is his quality.

"With Thabiso Kutumela and Judas Moseamedi, as well as with [Jose] Meza coming in, him being really effective in one against one, they can make goals out of not really a lot.

"Compliments to the entire team, it was absolutely fantastic fighting spirit. We have to keep fighting until the end of the season, our goal is very clear to stay in the league."

Maritzburg are next in action against AmaZulu in a DStv Premiership encounter at the Kings Park Stadium on Sunday 17 January, 3.30pm kick off.
