CHIEFS CLASH ENDS IN 1-1 STALEMATE
10 March 2021
Maritzburg United added another point to their DStv Premiership tally after playing to a 1-1 draw against Kaizer Chiefs at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Wednesday evening.
The hosts had started the game very brightly and had a chance after four minutes Tebogo Tlolane and Daylon Claasen combined well with Thabiso Kutumela, but the latter was unable to control his effort.
Three minutes later Kutumela turned provider for Bongokuhle Hlongwane, whose header flew over the bar.
There was however to be no denying the Team of Choice as Kutumela gave them the lead in the 15th minute, side-footing home after Claasen had opened up the door for Jose Meza, who provided the assist.
Hlongwane could have added to the scoreline soon after, but failed to hit the target with a header, following a cross by Bandile Shandu, with Tlolane also involved in the move.
Meza then tested Chiefs keeper Daniel Akpeyi with a stinging shot on 26 minutes.
At the other end, United goalkeeper Marcel Engelhardt didn't have much to do in the first half, with one exception being the 40th minute header from Willard Katsande which he pocketed.
The second half saw Chiefs working hard to get back in the game, although it was United who had a great chance to double the lead in the 79th minute when Kutumela picked out Judas Moseamedi, who cut onto his left before firing goalwards, only for his shot to cannon off the bar.
Two minutes later Nazeer Allie came to the rescue for the Team of Choice when he made a brilliant goal-line clearance to deny Lebogang Manyama.
But it was Manyama who was to deny Maritzburg all three points when he scored with a header in the 88th minute.
