MARITZBURG UNITED OFFER CONDOLENCES ON BHAMJEE PASSING
13 March 2021
Maritzburg United Football Club would like to express our sincere condolences to family and friends of renowned football administrator Ismail Bhamjee, who passed away on Friday, 12 March.
Bhamjee's most recent role in football was as president of the Council of Southern African Footballs Asociation (Cosafa).
His involvement in football stretches back to the 1970's when he was a referee in South Africa's NSL football league.
He later departed for Botswana and became the General Secretary and President of the Botswana Football Association.
Bhamjee also served as President of Botswana’s Olympic Committee and as a referee at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, and later became an executive member on both the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and FIFA committees.
Speaking on behalf of Maritzburg United, Team of Choice chairman Farook Kadodia acknowledged Bhamjee's significant contribution to sport and to football in particular.
"We would like to send our sincere condolences to the Bhamjee family and to all Ismail's friends and associates," Kadodia said.
"His tireless work over many decades contributed significantly to the upliftment of football in the southern African region and we are thankful for that. May his soul rest in peace."
Ismael's passing came just two months after the death of his brother Abdul, who had also been a football administrator.
