TEAM OF CHOICE EDGED OUT BY THE BUCCANEERS
23 January 2021
Saturday night's DStv Premiership match between Maritzburg United and Orlando Pirates at the Harry Gwala Stadium ended in a 1-0 win for the Soweto side.
The only goal of a tight game was scored four minutes before the interval by Deon Hotto as he converted Bongani Sam's cross.
Earlier in the first half, Maritzburg suffered a blow when they lost Clayton Daniels to injury in the 21st minute.
Team of Choice keeper Bongani Mpandle meanwhile made two good saves to keep out Vincent Pule.
There was little he could do however when Hotto steamed in to slide home Sam's ball from out wide.
Maritzburg coach Ernst Middendorp made a triple change after half time as Bongokuhle Hlongwane, Daylon Claasen and Thabiso Kutumela all came on.
There were chances for the likes of Malebogo Modise and Keagan Buchanan, but they were kept out by Bucs keeper Richard Ofori.
Hlongwane meanwhile was denied by Pirates midfielder Thabang Monare, who blocked his goalbound shot.
United continued to push for an equaliser and went close late on through Sibusiso Hlubi as he was also kept out by Ofori.
The Team of Choice now turn our attention to next Saturday's KwaZulu-Natal derby against Golden Arrows.
