COACH ERNEST HAILS 'MASSIVE' THREE POINTS
3 March 2021

Maritzburg United head coach Ernst Middendorp was pleased with the three points, as well as several aspects of his team's play following their 1-0 win over Black Leopards at the Harry Gwala Stadium.

After a poor run of recent results it was just what the Team of Choice needed to kick off the second half of our DStv Premiership campaign.

"We talked after our last game, after the halfway point of the season," Middendorp said after the victory in Pietermaritzburg against a Lidoda Duvha side who had beaten Maritzburg in their last three outings.

"We had to do something to change the structure, to bring in another mood, another attitude, another willingness, the mentality to win.

"The first game of the second half of the season was for us very, very crucial to make the three points. It's a massive, massive, massive three points," United's mentor added.

Maritzburg's ability to keep fighting even beyond the 90-minute mark paid dividends when they were awarded a 92nd minute penalty which was converted by Thabiso Kutumela.

Coach Ernst was pleased to see his men grinding out their efforts all the way to the death.

"We complained before about not getting the intensity we want to see from players in 90 minutes, if necessary five, six, seven minutes more," he said.

"We spoke a lot about it, we increased the intensity at training sessions to get used to it. In the end you play how you train.

"We know that the load can get too much, but we have options with a number of players who can take over and come in. It's important for us, we have to go all out every game, home and away."

Next up for the Team of Choice is a trip to the Free State - we face Bloemfontein Celtic in a DStv match on Saturday evening.
