MPANDLE: MARITZBURG SHOULD TREAT SEKHUKHUNE AS A PSL TEAM
3 February 2021
GladAfrica Championship side Sekhukhune United are a team in form and Maritzburg United are expecting a tough battle in a Nedbank Cup last 32 clash at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Friday evening (5pm kick off).
The newly-formed club, who play their home games in Tembisa, are currently top of the First Division standings.
The Team of Choice meanwhile have gone four league matches since their last victory, a 2-0 win away at Kaizer Chiefs.
Maritzburg will therefore be hoping to use the Nedbank Cup as a springboard to return to winning form and to build some confidence and momentum in the league while also potentially embarking on an exciting cup run.
But as goalkeeper Bongani Mpandle explains, the Team of Choice will need to be at their best and to also make sure they maximize their home-ground advantage.
"We need to work as a team and help each other and try to win our home games, and I think that as a team we need to put more effort in," Mpandle said.
"Sekhukhune are a good side and they will give us a good run. We must take it seriously, like as if we are playing against a PSL team.
"We are ready and I think we have learnt from our last two games,” Mpandle added. “Against Golden Arrows we started well but we didn't finish well. And against Orlando Pirates we came back strong after half time. So we still have to put more effort as a team and push each other.”
Sekhukhune have a number of former PSL players in their ranks including Prince Nxumalo (Ajax Cape Town), Walter Musona, Jabu Maluleke (both Polokwane City), Tapuwa Kapini (Highlands Park), Morgan Gould (Kaizer Chiefs and SuperSport United) and Siyabulela Shai (a former Mamelodi Sundowns player who had a loan spell at Maritzburg).
