MARITZBURG SEE OFF SEKHUKHUNE TO REACH NEDBANK CUP LAST 16

5 February 2021

A strong second half at the Harry Gwala on Friday night resulted in a 2-1 win for the Team of Choice over Sekhukhune FC in a Nedbank Cup last 32 encounter.

The game saw a first start for goalkeeper Marcel Engelhardt while Asanda Buthelezi and Phiwayinkosi Zuma both came off the bench to get their first taste of action in the first team.

The visiting side started the game positively and Thabo Motlafi tested Engelhardt early on before Sibusiso Mbonani went just wide with a header.

The Team of Choice's best chance fell to Keagan Buchanan, who was inches away from scoring with a powerful drive from just outside the box.

Maritzburg came out with plenty of intent after the half time interval and it soon paid dividends as the Sekhukhune defence failed to deal with a Dan Morgan throw-in and Tebogo Tlolane reacted sharply to fire a half volley past goalkeeper Tapuwa Kapini and into the roof of the net.

After Zuma fired an effort wide for United on 53 minutes, Sibusiso Hlubi doubled the advantage in the 70th minute.

Morgan was again involved as he looped a high ball over the Sekhukhune defence before Hlubi did well to bring down the ball and steer it into the net from close range before Kapini could react.

There were a couple of anxious moments when Sekhukhune scored in the 90th minute; Mbonani profiting in similar fashion to Tlolane after the home defence had failed to clear a corner.

But the Team of Choice were however able to hold on for the dying moments of the game without too much bother to book a spot in the last 16.
