MARITZBURG SET FOR CRUNCH SHOWDOWN WITH TTM ON FRIDAY
11 February 2021
A win in Friday's DStv Premiership match over Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila (TTM) at the Harry Gwala Stadium could help Maritzburg United open up some breathing space above the drop zone.
Friday's encounter in the KwaZulu-Natal Capital City kicks off at 5pm.
The two clubs are in a similar situation going into the match - both have struggled in the league of late but have been boosted by victories in the Nedbank Cup round of 32 last weekend.
The Team of Choice beat first division log leaders Sekhukhune United 2-1, while TTM overcame SuperSport United 1-0.
"I think the cup win will help us," said Maritzburg United striker Thabiso Kutumela.
"We lost three games in a row in the DStv Premiership (before that) and this cup win is going to help us to boost our morale to go into the league game that is coming on Friday."
Kutu says the United players have been determined not to take their feet off the pedal this week and have been pushing hard at training. He also cautioned that TTM will be in a positive mood on Friday themselves.
"We've been working hard since the cup win - we didn't say, 'let's wait for Friday and get some rest', we just carried on working hard from Monday and we can see progress to go forward to the TTM game," Kutumela said.
"TTM have not been good like us. But they won in the cup game against SuperSport United, so its going to be a tough one because they are motivated.
"They see their progress, like us. And so I think it's going to be a tough game because we all need the three points.
"We are only separated by goal difference and it's important to beat the teams around us, it will help us going forward."
The Team of Choice have met the Limpopo side on two previous occasions - in last season's play-offs. Maritzburg won both matches, 2-0 and 2-1.
