TTM CLASH ENDS IN DISAPPOINTING DEFEAT
12 February 2021
Maritzburg United lost 1-0 to Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila in a DStv Premiership encounter at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Friday evening.
The result was particularly disappointing when taking into account that Maritzburg dominated the possession and chances on goal opportunities over the 90 minutes.
In what had been a cagey first half, the Team of Choice had been able to fashion some decent chances.
The lively Thabiso Kutumela had looked set to score in the opening moments when he flashed in an angled shot from the right, but TTM keeper Washington Arubi made a fine diving save to claw the ball out the top corner.
Bandile Shandu was also denied by Arubi, while Tebogo Tlolane had a shot blocked before Kutumela got unlucky as he shot struck the bar, bounced off Arubi, landed on the goal-line and then spun back into play.
It had looked set to be 0-0 at the interval but instead the Limpopo side stung the Team of Choice when Thabo Mnyamane scored with a well-struck free kick three minutes into added time.
More chances came Maritzburg's way after the interval and Kutumela was again close when he placed a low shot marginally wide after some good work by Jose Mesa in the 50th minute.
Kutumela had another shot blocked before Clayton Daniels bundled the ball in the net but had the goal ruled out for an infringement against the visiting keeper; replays suggesting Daniels may have been harshly judged.
At the other end, home keeper Marcel Engelhardt made a brilliant reflex save to keep out Alfred Ndengane's header before Brandon Theron shot wide.
The KZN side piled the pressure on in the closing 20 minutes of the match and did have a great chance in the 78th minute when Kutumela slipped in Sibusiso Hlubi, but he fired over.
In the end, some stubborn defending by TTM enabled the Limpopo side to claim all three points.
