COACH ERNST: WE WILL KEEP THE MOMENTUM GOING

6 April 2021

Maritzburg United head coach Ernst Middendorp and his technical team will use the upcoming fixture break to ensure the squad is fully fit and ready for the final lap of the season.

Apart from some players being able to recuperate and recover from injury, it will be work as usual in terms of training and friendly games until United next take to the field in just over two weeks time.

The lengthy break is due to the matches against Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates being postponed because of their participation in Caf competitions.

The Team of Choice's next fixture is against Baroka FC at the Thohoyandou Stadium on April 23.

"We will use the time, until the 23rd of April, to keep the momentum going," coach Ernst said. "We have to do our job and find the right way to periodise it and get everybody on the same boat."

When United do return, they will be looking to build on a five-match unbeaten run, which includes last weekend's impressive 5-1 home win over Chippa United. It was the biggest winning scoreline Maritzburg have recorded in our PSL history.

"It's a huge stat, following this away win in Nelspruit against TS Galaxy some weeks ago," coach Ernst stated.

The Germany-born tactician was not best pleased with how his side starred against the Chilli Boys, but was happy with their reaction after going a goal down.

"We had a certain problem in the first 18, 20 minutes, then we conceded, zero-one," Middendorp explained.

"We were not really able to bring our approach. But all of a sudden after we were down, we started to work with the first pressing line, and the second pressing line, forcing the opponents to make mistakes.

"The attack was absolutely good, very effective and the remaining 70 minutes we scored five, and it could have been one or two more."

"We are still making mistakes, we still have space for improvement,” he cautioned. “Some players are not where we want to have them, some have been battling with injury."
