UNITED'S TRIP TO SOWETO ENDS IN BUCS DEFEAT
18 April 2021
It was a tough evening at the office as Maritzburg United went down 2-0 to Orlando Pirates in a DStv Premiership match played at the Orlando Stadium on Sunday.
Missed chances and some errors in defence proved costly in a game which was possibly closer than the scoreline suggests. A first half injury to the on-form Jose Meza also didn’t help.
The Team of Choice certainly enjoyed some good early chances in Orlando, but Daylon Claasen failed to hit the target while Thabiso Kutumela was brilliantly denied by Wayne Sandilands.
The Buccaneers had opportunities before the break, but Maritzburg keeper Marcel Engelhardt did superbly to keep out Deon Hotto’s shot with his leg, before the Namibian sent another effort wide.
After going into the break locked at 0-0, Pirates took the lead on the hour mark when Kabelo Dlamini picked out Fortune Makaringe who crossed for Vincent Pule to fire home a back-post volley.
United unfortunately missed a great chance to equalise 10 minutes later when Bongokuhle Hlongwane fired over the crossbar with the goal at his mercy after Bucs had failed to clear their box.
The Sea Robbers applied the killer blow in the 78th minute when Engelhardt was caught out by the wet pitch as a long ball from the back left him stranded and allowed Pule to score.
The German keeper did to his credit make a string of excellent saves after that to deny Pirates a third.
